Art Equipment Essentials

ART EQUIPMENT
Art equipment prices can soon mount up here are some things an art tutor friend of mine thinks are  essential for a beginner:

WATER COLOUR PAPER
Buy 300gsm weight. Bockingford, Cotman or Daler Rowney are good.

PAINTS
Winsor & Newton Paints tablet or pan, but tubes are fine too. A box of twelve Cotman half pan water colour paints are a good starting point.

BRUSHES
You will need a small round (1) maybe a (5) and a larger round (10) or (12). Again, buy decent quality sable or weasel such as Cotman or ProArte.

PALETTE
Ceramic palette.I love my ceramic daisy yin yan palette!

PASTELS
They come in two main types: hard or sketching pastels (usually small and square) or soft (larger and wrapped in paper). Very cheap can be nasty and no fun to use.

PENCILS
A 2B for sketching and a 9B for drawing. You can but more but don’t bother with all the grades inbetween.

OTHER STUFF
A cartridge paper sketchbook for drawing. Acrylic eraser. Small box of vine charcoal. Water soluble colour pencils. Putty rubber. Craft knife for sharpening pencils.
